API 527 500 Series Compressor

The API 527,like all of the API VCA based compressors,such as the 225L and the 2500 Stereo Bus Compressor, is an incredibly versatile compressor designed to deal with a wide variety of systems.

The first adjustable feature is the choice between OLD and NEW style compression, which relates to the units gain reduction methods. OLD refers to Feed Back style compression, whereas NEW refers to Feed Forward style compression, common with modern compressors.

There is also a SOFT/HARD switch for an over-easy type compression, providing a very natural,uncompressed sound or a sharp knee type that provides a much more severe and obvious compression and limiting effect.


The 527 features an Output fader control that ranges from minus infinity to +10dB,and output capability is +28 dBu through our 2520 discrete amplifier and a large API output transformer. Up to a +28 dBu output can be achieved and wherever it is set, the output level remains fairly constant independent of the threshold or ratio control,similar to the "more/less" Ceiling control on the API 525 compressor,allowing for live adjustments without any noticeable gain changes in the program level.

The patented THRUSTA® function can be used to apply a high pass filter before the RMS detector circuit, preserving a punchy bottom end.

Attack and Release are continuously adjustable on the 527 with the release time adjusted by rotating the inner concentric RELEASE knob with values ranging from .3 seconds to 3 seconds. Attack time can be adjusted using the outer concentric ATTACK knob, with a range from 1 millisecond to 25 milliseconds.

A link feature allows two units to be linked for accurate control of stereo sound sources.
