The API 5500 stereo equalizer is specifically designed to address the limitations of the original 550 console equalizer. The original Saul Walker design has been improved by the introduction of a balanced input,a true straight-wire bypass,an integrated power supply with noiseless muting,and a range control that expands its versatility to mastering applications.
Akin to all API products, the API 5500 Stereo Equalizer contains no integrated circuits in its signal path, with gain achieved by the use of two hand-built 2520 operational amplifiers in each channel. The balanced input of the unit is handled by a 2510 discrete operational amplifier,similar to the 2520, but without the high current output stage. The API 5500 is capable of delivering +30dBm before clipping,a massive amount of headroom that will be hard to push to distortion.
The range control is a new feature of the 5500 and allows the range of the amplitude controls to be reduced to 1/2 or 1/4 of their stated scale,allowing adjustment of the tonal balance with finer resolution in an even gentler manner. A true hardwire bypass is also included.
